In Math, we start with a whole group lesson to learn the Michigan Standards for 2nd grade. To better meet the needs of all learners, we also have some differentiated learning time where students can make a math choice while I work with small groups. This is much like our Daily 5 time. While students are working with partners or independently to practice the skills at their own level, I work with a small group. Being able to work with small groups of students allows me time to work on remediation with students who need a little more time to learn a concept, on skill development for students who are right on track, and on enrichment for students who fully grasp the concept and need a challenge. This is a favorite time of day for the students, as it is a lot of fun and full of great learning experiences.
Students will be choosing between buddy games, math tools, or technology while I call students to work on skills in a small groups.
Some of the big concepts we work on in 2nd grade include math fluency of basic math facts, place value, 2 digit addition and subtraction, geometric and plane shapes, telling time to 5 minutes, counting and identifying money, and measuring. For students who have mastered these concepts, multiplication will be introduced.
It is very important for your child to master the basic math facts in both addition and subtraction in order to be successful in the other concepts.
