Daily 5 Literacy...reading independently, listening to reading, word work, writing, read with teacher
During our Language Arts block, we have a whole group lesson on Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency or Expanding vocabulary. We use this time also to introduce new vocabulary, grammar, and read selections from our I-Ready selections. During this time, we work on 2nd grade skills and the required curriculum content. In addition to this whole group time, we have Daily 5. This block of time is differentiated so students are working at their own individual level. Students work individually to work on Language Arts skills while I pull small groups to work with me. They have choices between reading individually in their own "just right' level, working on writing at their own pace and level, word work for practicing spelling patterns and words, and listening to books. We introduce the choices slowly and work on stamina at a task. One of the rules is for students to find a "smart" spot to work which gives kids the flexibility to sit anywhere in the room, to stand, or to lay on the carpet. Some kids learn better by being allowed to sit in a non-traditional way. For the kids who like to sit at a traditional table, that is fine also. Other rules include keeping on task (stamina), working quietly, getting started right away, and working by themselves. I have found that kids really love the Daily 5 process. They aren't stuck in one spot or stuck doing the same thing and they get to focus on the skills they want to practice.
Spelling
Each week your student will receive a list of spelling words that focus on a spelling pattern and high frequency words. We will learn the spelling pattern and practice spelling at school during the week. However, students are expected to also practice at home so they can master the spelling words for the test on Friday.
Independent Reading/ AR Reading/Epic and RAZ kids
During Daily 5, students can read independently/ have AR reading time. Students may take AR tests anytime during the day except during directions and whole group instruction. In addition, I expect students to be reading at home on a regular basis (Home Connection). I expect each student to read enough to make the marking period goals. The goals are 25 points (first trimester goal), 50 points (2nd trimester goal), and 75 points (3rd trimester goal) . At 125 points, Miss Cindy makes a fleece blanket for your child. What a treat! As a grand prize, students who read 150 AR points by the middle of May will get to “Hang with Hogle” after school and go Bowling. Anyone with 250 or more points will go on the Champion Ribbon forever. Look below for the AR wall details. In addition to AR books, students are encouraged to read at school on Epic which is online reading. Details will come home on how to purchase Epic for home use if your child loves Epic like many do. Lastly, students can read on RAZ kids at school and at home. Login information will come home.
Listening to Reading
During Daily 5, students can choose to listen to a story on the computer. This helps them develop auditory learning skills and listening comprehension.
Writing
During Daily 5, students can choose to write. They can write in their journals, make a card for a friend, write a book review, make a list, write a story, or finish some writing from another day.rite
Word Work
Students can choose to work on words during Daily 5 and practice spelling words. They have a wide variety of ways to build words including smelly markers, playdough, rainbows, building with lego tiles, wiki sticks, and games to make words. Through word work students practice vowel patterns and other phonics rules to help them become better readers and writers. Word work is fun.
Guided Reading
While students are working on their individual literacy skills, I work with small groups of students in Guided Reading groups based on their reading levels and the literacy needs of that group. The reading groups rotate so I take different groups each day.
Interventions
We are lucky to have good interventions for students who are struggling to learn how to read. Students are assessed at the beginning and middle of the year. Students who are reading below grade level will get an intervention. For the lowest readers in 2nd grade a reading teacher will pull students in small groups to give them an additional reading lesson three times per week. This reading teacher is Missy White. For readers who are only slightly below grade level they will get to go to Buddies three times a week. Buddies is a reading intervention where community members work with students one on one to develop reading skills. Students who have an IEP and recieve Special Education services for reading go to Mrs. Berkemeier every day for reading support.
